We began classes in our new facility in August of 1999.  Each classroom is equipped with at least one computer networked with the administrative offices, and a television connected to the media retrieval system.  We also have a surveillance system with video cameras for observing and recording activity in the building.  Furthermore, several classrooms are equipped with scanners, printers, PC-to-TV converters, overhead projectors, and other equipment.

We encourage communication between the community and the school.   Conferences with teachers and/or administrators are available upon request.

Library Resources

Our library is located in the center of the building.  We have 10 computers for student use, a computer designated for the card catalog and a circulation computer.  We also have two network laser printers, one for student use and one for teacher use.  A typewriter is available for use on items such as scholarship forms.  Thanks to the State Department of Education, we have access to several databases:  EBSCO, First Search, Electric Library, and Infotrac.  These are wonderful resources for research.  The user names and passwords to be used from remote locations (home, etc.) are available upon request from Mrs. Wood (English Dept.) or Mrs. Robinson in the library.

 ECHS Band

The Elk City High School Band has a tradition of excellence that stretches back into the 1940's. For over 80 years, the Elk City Band has been an active part of the Elk City School system and community.  The 2004 enrollment is 154, which is the 2nd largest band ever in Elk City and is the largest class AAA band in the state.  This enrollment comprises almost 1/3 of the total student body at Elk City High School.

The band has earned many honors during the past several years, including 20 years of superior (I) ratings at the Oklahoma Secondary School Activities Association (OSSAA) state concert contest in the last 20 years and twenty three consecutive years of superior ratings at the OSSAA regional marching contest.  The band has earned the OSSAA Sweepstakes award for Class AAA nineteen times in the past twenty two years.

The ECHS Band has performed out of state many times.  Some of the most notable appearances include a featured performance at the Epcot Center at Walt Disney World in Orlando in 1986, marching in the presidential inaugural parade as Oklahoma's official representative in 1989, performing as one of only four bands nationally in a massed band performance for the Sugar Bowl in New Orleans in 1991, 1995, 1999, and 2003.  The Elk City Band traveled to San Antonio for the Alamo Bowl during December of 1997.  They have also traveled to the Holiday Bowl in San Diego in 2000 and will return in 2004.  In 1991, the ECHS Band also was the only high school band chosen to provide music for the inauguration of Governor David Walters.  The band traveled to Florida in 1993 for the Citrus Bowl Festival.

Numerous performance opportunities for the students are provided by means of the marching band, symphonic band, jazz band, brass choir, woodwind choir, percussion ensemble, and other opportunities for solo and small ensemble performance.  The Elk City students are very active in honor groups and have filled 31 places in the All-State Band and Orchestra in the past twelve years.  In 1989, one Elk City student, Susan Snipes, earned a spot in the McDonald's All-American Band.  Moreover, several Elk City band members have received substantial music scholarships to various universities in Oklahoma and Texas.

The Band enjoys superb administrative and community support as evidenced by the $60,000.00 raised in just five weeks to send the band to the inaugural parade.  There are plans to expand the already fine facility.  Most of the school owned instruments are of professional quality.  There is also an active and productive Band Booster organization.

The ECHS Band Director, Randy Brooks, has received many honors including being named Southwest Oklahoma's Band Director of the Year in 1989.  In 1992, he became the youngest president ever elected to the Oklahoma Bandmasters Association.  In 2001, he was selected Oklahoma Bandmasters Association Director of the Year.  Assistant director is Summer Walje.  Tim Dewitt serves as the percussion director with the high school band and also conducts one of the junior high bands.  He has held many offices at both the regional and state level for the Southwest and Oklahoma Band Director organizations.  Dewitt is also the head of the Elk City Jazz program.  This program has been successful at the regional and state levels.

  ECHS Vocal Music

Four different groups make up the Elk City Vocal Music program at Elk City Secondary Schools.  Over 150 students are involved in the Junior High Select Chorus, High School Varsity, Chorale and Jazz Choirs.  Lori Daubenspeck is the director  and Jerri Headrick is her assistant.

The Elk City Varsity, Chorale and Jazz Choirs are comprised of students in grades 9 through 12.  The Jazz Choir was established in 1996 and is a select group of 16 to20 students who have at least one year's experience in high school chorus and have auditioned to be a part of the group.  The primary focus of the group is that of singing vocal jazz literature; however, more traditional choral music is performed in the spring of the year for district and state level competitions.   Since its inception, the group has established itself as one of the premier high school vocal jazz ensembles in Oklahoma.  Traditional choral literature performance is the focus of both the Varsity and Chorale choirs of Elk City High School.  Both groups have steadily increased in size and in 2003 the ECHS choir program received the Oklahoma Secondary Activities Association's Sweepstakes designation as being one of the top choir programs to perform at state competition in class 3A.

Members of the senior high school choir program have been recognized on the state level as all-state performers.  The following is a list of students who have been selected to the All-State chorus in the past ten years:
